New & Abstract @ KUNST/MITTE Magdeburg: 28.–31. August

We are pleased to announce that New & Abstract will be participating in this year’s KUNST/MITTE in Magdeburg, taking place from August 28–31. Over the years, KUNST/MITTE has established itself as one of the most important platforms for contemporary art in Central Germany, attracting numerous visitors, collectors, and artists to the state capital each year.

Together, our artists represent a broad spectrum of contemporary artistic positions – ranging from painting and drawing to installation-based practices.

A special highlight will be the works of Friederike Meier, who uses artificial intelligence to create photorealistic portraits of women. These works challenge prevailing ideals of beauty and gender norms, portraying figures full of ambivalence – fragile yet strong – and capturing layered emotions such as anger, grief, or determination in a single, charged moment.

For Meier, AI is more than a mere tool: through precise prompts she exposes the beauty standards embedded within AI systems, before translating the resulting digital images into vibrant oil and acrylic paintings. Each figure is given a name and a story, transforming from an AI-generated image into a unique identity on canvas. The portraits are also presented in augmented reality, allowing viewers to experience the works in a new, immersive way.
