Ilja Freer
Ilja Freer’s painting emerges from a tension between control and openness. Working in layered, process-driven compositions, he explores the interplay of colour, form, and space.
At the core of his practice is the material presence of paint as an active force. Through juxtaposition, overlap, and reduction, colour relationships generate rhythm, contrast, and harmony. Each colour asserts itself individually yet only fully unfolds within the context of the whole.
Freer’s works are not abstractions of external motifs but autonomous pictorial structures arising from the act of painting itself. Guided by a notion of “controlled chance,” compositions evolve intuitively, where errors become catalysts for new directions.
In dialogue with the history of abstraction, his practice seeks not reinvention, but a distinct contemporary position within an open field of painterly possibility.
