The self-taught painter, Ilja Freer, processes many periods of his life in abstract acrylic paintings. He was born in Berlin in 1976 and already enjoyed painting and drawing as a young boy. He experiments a lot with color and technique in his work as an artist. He likes to play intuitively with the deviating norm to reality.
Since when do you paint and what are your favorite motives?
I have been immersed in the world of painting since my early childhood, where the magic of colors and forms captured my imagination. My journey with art began in the realm of school projects, evolving over the years into a passion that would shape my artistic identity. Initially, I found myself drawn to the vibrant and expressive nature of graffiti art, where the city walls became my canvas in 1990´s.
However, as the winds of change swept through my creative spirit, I transitioned towards a new artistic horizon—abstract art with acrylic paint in 2019. This shift marked a significant chapter in my artistic evolution, opening up a realm of possibilities that allowed me to explore the depths of emotion and energy.
In the vibrant world of abstract art, my motives are as diverse as the spectrum of human experience. I find inspiration in everything that exudes power and energy—be it the dynamic forces of nature, the resilience of the human spirit, or the pulsating rhythms of the urban landscape. Abstract art, with its freedom of expression and boundless interpretations, provides the perfect canvas for me to translate these influences into a visual language.

When you create a new work, how do you proceed? What comes first?

This initial impulse serves as the foundation upon which the entire composition will unfold.
The first step in my creative process often involves a period of reflection and exploration. I might delve into my own experiences, draw inspiration from the world around me, or engage in activities that stimulate my senses. It's during these moments that the concept for the artwork begins to take shape, fueled by a fusion of personal narratives and external stimuli.
Once the seed of an idea has firmly rooted itself in my mind, I turn my attention to the choice of materials. From what do you get your motivation?
The vibe of Berlin. All the different people and the creative interaction. Every day, the city reinvents itself in a different place. New things, but also old things, keep coming up in a new guise. What happens in the world outside of Berlin also inspires me, such as music. I like almost everything and have learned that every style has something beautiful in it. I'm a big fan of art where you can always discover something new. And you don't recognize at first glance what it's actually about.
Your life without art would be...
I understand that art plays a significant role in the lives of many people. Art can be a source of inspiration, creativity, and emotional expression. It has the power to evoke feelings, convey messages, and provide a means of communication that goes beyond words.
