Born in Gelnhausen, Germany, Petra von Kazinyan currently lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Her creative talent was recognized and encouraged at an early age, but nevertheless she refused to go to art school. Petra decided that nobody could teach her art, and so she went to University for literature and philosophy studies.

Since when do you paint and what are your favourite motives?

Since I was a child; actually, I‘ve never not been painting or drawing and always felt the urge to transform perceptions into art….. my way of exploring the world through painting.

So my motives are highly variable and depend on my current state of mind. But generally, I aim to explore the human condition in a digital world, my philosophical background always lingering in the imaginative shadows.

Currently I’m working on an enigmatic, poetic series carrying a sense of mystery, sensuality and intimacy….. it’s all about sheets and female anti-portraits, like the minimalist abstraction of a baroque castle’s antichamber….

When you create a new work, how do you proceed? What comes first?

It always starts with an idea, most of the time coming out of the blue. Sometimes it’s just a vague feeling, starting to unfold and getting more and more concrete during the creative process which is usually based on drafts and sketches.

From what do you get your motivation?

From life! Like I said before, it‘s not a choice or desire to create, it‘s an urge.

Your life without art would be...

Unthinkable!

What is the best art place in your city at the moment?

My studio ;)
