Giovanna Desiderato (b. 1984) is an abstract painter from Switzerland currently based in Lugano. Her approach to abstract art stems from the need to negate the representation of reality by expressing feelings through interaction with lines, rhythms, shapes, and colors.
Since when do you paint and what are your favourite motives?
I began painting in search of a deeper connection with the human condition. I have been painting since I was 18 years old. I painted and drew passionately but started exhibiting in the last five years. What motivates me is the need to express emotions and let them flow freely. This creates a strong connection with myself and the audience.
When you create a new work, how do you proceed? What comes first?
My work is very spontaneous. My paintings are never planned; instead, I strike a balance between instinct and reason, free from any form of control.
From what do you get your motivation?
My motivation comes from those little moments of mindfulness. It's this urgent need to explore new forms. I find happiness in the conscious search for something that may remain elusive: an endless exploration.
Your life without art would be...
Empty. Like a world without music.
What is the best art place in your city at the moment?
I'm tempted to say that this place that I'm very jealous of, is located a few minutes from my studio and is surrounded by nature. But I'm also happy to say that, for me, the best place to go for inspirational art in my city is Masi Lugano. Founded in 2015, the Museo d'arte della Svizzera Italiana has quickly become one of the most visited art museums in Switzerland.
