Jonathan Lawes is a British artist & designer, born in 1986 in Hannover, Germany. He currently lives and works in south east London. Jonathan specialises in the screen printing process, creating playful juxtapositions of shape and colour that conjure moods and meaning from their multi-layered depths.
I’ve been printing full-time since 2017 and follow a very abstract approach, with a love for shape & colour.
When you create a new work, how do you proceed? What comes first?
For me it’s always colours first. They’re the most important element. After that comes the shapes.
From what do you get your motivation?
Motivation comes from all around me. It’s about keeping my eyes open and taking things in.
Your life without art would be...
Life without art would be…a less colourful existence.
What is the best art place in your city at the moment?
I’m a big fan of White Cube in Bermondsey.
