Meet Kim Nina Wiechers, a passionate paint artist born in 1996 and based in Hamburg. Art has been a pivotal part of Kim's life, serving as a medium for expressing emotions that words alone cannot capture. Her creations are deeply personal, each painting telling its own unique story, infused with her emotions and intuitions. Kim specializes in abstract art, cherishing how it allows every viewer to discover their own meanings and form personal connections with her work. This interpretive freedom is what she loves most about her art form. In addition to her personal projects, Kim is enthusiastic about commissioned work, enjoying the collaborative process of exchanging ideas and inspirations to create something truly special. How did you get into art?
As a small child, I loved painting and eagerly watched my mother create. She painted a lot, and her works adorned our home. During the last two years of my schooling, I attended an art-focused school. Afterward, I drifted away from art for a while and pursued a different job. A few years after my father passed away, I underwent therapy with therapist with whom I began art therapy to express and process my emotions. Through this process, I rediscovered art, and it has been an integral part of my life ever since. About 1.5 years ago, I started working part-time for myself alongside my regular job, and art has been my daily companion ever since.
How would you describe your style? What makes your work special?
My art appears expansive at times but upon closer inspection, it is interwoven with small details. There is no single line or specific style that I follow in my works; however, a sense of unity becomes apparent upon closer examination. Each of my paintings personally conveys a story or carries a particular message, but it is not essential to me that others recognize it. Rather, I aim for each individual viewer to bring their own thoughts and feelings to the painting, making it a personal experience for everyone. My paintings allow for interpretation, and I enjoy filling in these gaps and engaging in discussions with others about them.
How do you go about developing your work?
Most of the time, I don't schedule when to paint or set deadlines for completing a piece by a certain day or week. Instead, I allow myself the freedom to take my time and avoid self-imposed pressure. I find immense inspiration from my surroundings, and when ideas come to me during these moments, I store them in my mind until I can translate them onto canvas. Throughout the painting process, I embrace spontaneity and allow chance to guide my hand. After completing a painting, I often let it sit for two or three days before revisiting it. I'll view it again with a different mood, under different lighting, or perhaps in a new setting. If I'm still not satisfied, I continue to refine it until I feel a deep connection with the work. I have an intuitive sense of when a painting is finished. When I look at it and it triggers such a wonderful feeling in my gut, I know it's complete.
Who or what influences you?
What inspires me most of all is nature. In every one of my artworks, there is a reflection of something I have seen, felt, smelled, or experienced in the natural world. There is no greater sanctuary for me than being in the woods, by the sea, or in the meadows. The tranquility and beauty of these environments, along with the dynamic interplay of light and shadow, sun and darkness, day and night, never fail to leave me in awe and provide me with the necessary space to unfold creatively. Moreover, the people I encounter—the conversations I have, the time spent with friends and family—all contribute to my inspiration and help me focus on the essential and important things in life. It's through these connections that I find profound meaning and purpose, which I strive to capture and convey in my art. Ultimately, it is the connection of external influences with my own inner world that drives me to express myself on canvas. In essence, painting is my way of communicating the beauty, harmony, and complexity of life as I perceive it, bridging the external and internal worlds in a visual dialogue that speaks to the soul.
Make us curious. What are you planning to do next?
Currently, I am excited to share that my first two exhibitions are being held at cafes in Hamburg, my beloved hometown. As I look ahead, my next aspiration is to showcase my work in a gallery setting. Additionally, I have recently launched a small online shop on my website and an Etsy store where you can explore and purchase art prints and postcards featuring my creations.
