Alexander Lis – Painting Between Stillness and Movement

Alexander Lis – Painting Between Stillness and Movement

Frankfurt-based artist Alexander Lis explores the balance between movement and stillness in his abstract compositions. His work is shaped by a precise sense of composition, rhythm, and structure, developed through his background in graffiti and communication design. Over the years, Lis has created a distinct visual language inspired by natural phenomena – the flow of water, cloud formations, shifting landscapes, and topographic patterns seen from above. Working on raw canvas, he embraces the material’s tactile presence, allowing surface and gesture to coexist.

How do you perceive Frankfurt’s art scene, and what role does the Discovery Art Fair play for you?

Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region have a lively and diverse art scene, shaped by strong galleries, active collectors, and an open attitude toward contemporary art. For me, Atelier Frankfurt plays a key role – it’s a place of exchange, collaboration, and shared inspiration. At the same time, Frankfurt’s international character, with its airport and global community, makes the Discovery Art Fairperfectly positioned here. It connects local artistic voices with a broader, international perspective and strengthens the visibility of the region’s creative energy.

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Discovery?

Definitely the encounters – meeting visitors, collectors, and other artists. These moments of exchange are what make such events special. Of course, it’s great when sales happen, but for me the value lies in the conversations and connections. I’m very happy to be part of New & Abstract this year – their approach combines professionalism with openness, and they really care about supporting artistic growth.

How would you describe your work to someone who hasn’t seen it yet?

The work moves between stillness and movement. A background in graffiti and communication design informs a strong sense of composition, rhythm, and balance. Time spent living in cities such as London, Berlin, and Amsterdam has expanded the perception of space, motion, and structure. Layers of color and transparency gradually shift against each other, drawing inspiration from natural phenomena – the sea, clouds, wind, and topographic patterns seen from above. The idea that something fleeting can become lasting remains essential. Each painting holds traces of movement, direction, and time.

What does direct exchange with visitors and collectors mean to you?

It’s very meaningful. Seeing people react to a painting in real life – the colors, the texture, the atmosphere – creates a unique feedback loop. Many collectors have followed my work for years, and meeting them in person adds another layer to that relationship. At the Discovery Art Fair, I’m looking forward to new encounters, dialogue, and the chance to share my latest developments. These experiences always bring new energy back into the studio.
